A little of what Cyprus has to
offer
Cyprus is blessed with a
warm Mediterranean climate, and sunshine is almost
guaranteed during the long summer months. Famous
among the younger generation for Ayia Napa, the
slightly more boisterous answer to Ibiza - Cyprus has
plenty of other attractions for people of all ages.
Here are a few...
Cyprus has many unspoilt areas of natural beauty, and
is ideal for hiking and mountain biking excursions.
There are established nature trails in Persephone,
namely Kaledonia and Atalante; and elsewhere others
bearing the names of the Greek gods Adonis and
Aphrodite. There are established mountain bike hire
and trekking centres across the island, as you will
see with a quick look online.
If you are planning on visiting Cyprus as part of an
escape from the British Winter, you may be surprised
to learn that there are four ski lifts on the island!
The season is perhaps less surprisingly fairly short
- roughly akin to the Scottish ski season, and lasts
from January to around mid-March. Mount Olympus hosts
skiing on Cyprus.
Later in the year as the weather gets warmer, Cyprus
has established windsurfing and kitesurfing rental
outlets, as well as lessons for beginners and those
at intermediate level. For those that want a more
instant thrill - which requires no training but
definitely a certain level of nerve - that
Mediterranean favourite of paragliding is also widely
available on the beaches of Limassol, Larnaca and
beyond.
Famagusta is great beaches for less strenuous family time on
the beach. There is plenty of golden sand, so that
overcrowding need not be a problem if you are
prepared to explore. The resort areas of Protaras and
Pernera have been well-developed for the family
holiday, with plenty of themed family bars serving
kids meals and affordable drinks for the adults.
For the younger generation not traveling with
children, the previously mentioned Ayia Napa has been
geared up for the clubbing set for some time now, and
the warm summer nights make conditions perfect for
all night partying. A word of caution for the
dedicated ravers; Greek police are not nearly as
tolerant as their Spanish counterparts when it comes
to the use of controlled substances, and those caught
with club drugs can face hefty sanctions, including
imprisonment - perhaps best to stick to the cheap
drinks.
As with many products these days, the best way to
